A global Google snapshot

According to the 2021 annual report, Alphabet employs 156,500 staff worldwide, with offices in 170 cities and 60 countries. More than 100,000 of its employees are in the US, where the average Googler earns US$147,426 per year. How does that compare to the Big Tech giants? There's work to do in catching Meta ($163,526) but average Google salaries are comfortably ahead of LinkedIn ($142,860) and Microsoft ($139,993).

Google employees typically consider themselves well-remunerated, with 82% of those who rated their employer saying that they are paid fairly. Of course, salary is not the sole criteria for evaluating Google as an employer. The fact that Alphabet enjoys 3.3-year employee retention on average would suggest that the combination of salary, working environment, company mission and benefits are striking the right balance.

Google salaries in the United States

Salary comparison engine Comparably posts an alternative average annual salary of US$133,066 for employees in the US. The discrepancy is most likely due to the self-reported nature of the data. The salary range is as broad as one might expect from a global tech corporation, with the Director of Finance leading the way on $600,000 and Receptionists bringing up the rear on $37,305.

The differences between departments are notable. Average salaries in Human Resources ($85,556) and Operations ($83,966) are lower than Marketing ($116,247) and Business Development ($207,494). A more consistent indicator of salary expectations might be the five distinct salary bands into which roles at Google typically fall:

Diversity, equity and inclusion at Google

According to recent Google data, the highest-paying leadership positions are overwhelmingly occupied by men (71.9%) compared to women (28.1%), which is a slightly heavier imbalance compared to the 67.8% to 32.2% male/female ratio for the corporation overall.

Addressing the gender hourly pay gap, which currently sits at a median of 15%, remains a priority DEI commitment.

Average Google salaries in Ireland

Should you request a transfer to the EU headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, to unlock a higher salary? Although average employee salaries in Ireland are competitive, there's the cost of living in the sixth most expensive city in Europe to factor in. The average rent in the Irish capital might not shock a New Yorker or San Francisco native, but it's a world away from the cost of living in the cheapest places to live for expats.

With the reminder that these average salaries are calculated from anecdotal submissions, here's what a selection of Google's 8,000 employees in Dublin can hope to see on their payslip:

The salary for apprenticeships compares admirably with the average employee salary in Ireland overall (€38,500) and reflects the status of a Google Internship as one of the most coveted graduate programs in tech. In fact, with acceptance rates as low as 3.75% a Google Internship is harder to secure than a place at Harvard.
